Ból jest złożonym uczuciem, obejmującym procesy psychiczne natury emocjonalnej, poznawczej i behawioralnej, i jako taki należy do stanów psychicznych. Jednak na fenomen bólu składają się komponenty psychiczne i patofizjologiczne, trudne do interpretacji. Często używa się terminu „cierpienie”, oznaczającego stałe, świadome doświadczanie bólu i/lub przykrości i odnoszącego się do szerokiego zakresu intensywnych i nieprzyjemnych odczuć, mogących mieć źródła fizyczne i psychiczne. Najbardziej wszechstronną i wyczerpującą definicję bólu podaje Międzynarodowe Towarzystwo Badania Bólu (IASP): „nieprzyjemne wrażenie i przeżycie emocjonalne, związane z realnym lub potencjalnym uszkodzeniem tkanek, lub ekwiwalentem takiego uszkodzenia”.
